Sibley Gardens, 916 W. Jefferson, Trenton, MI

Dine-in date: January 27, 2016

Overall Rating: Terry & LJ say, “This Is Downriver’s Premier Dining Spot!”

Service – The service at Sibley Gardens was friendly and unobtrusive, which was perfect, as Terry and I had informed our server that we were going to be having a leisure dinner with lots of conversation about food and wine.. We never felt rushed , even when the dining room was filling up for the dinner hour.Everyone from the hostess to the server and support staff made us feel very well taken care of and comfortable. Well done!

Ambiance – Sibley Gardens has always been a downriver favorite and once you’re inside the cozy restaurant, you’ll understand why. Low lighting, plush seating, and a warmth that envelops you. I don’t know if Frank Sinatra ever dined here but I think if he had, he would’ve loved it !

Meal that was consumed – I started with a glass of Prosecco, which, for me does seem to live up to its rep by, “picking me up”. After that second sip in, it just says “ ok, begin anew! Next, I ordered the battered and fried fresh mushrooms which were (this is key) fresh mushrooms.Light golden brown, hot and crisp, perfectly cooked. I requested cocktail sauce and ranch was also served with them. Although fried mushrooms are not one of Terry’s favorites (sorry Terry, I should have asked), she did try one, and, liked it. The house salad I had was fresh and crisp and served with their house Italian dressing , on the side. Terry and I split the Steak Sammy, which is famous in itself. This dish is a tenderloin of beef  that is served in an appropriate white dinner dish with a slight curve around the edges so the tenderloin rests in just a bit of the delicious garlic broth.

It was cooked to perfection just the way we ordered it, ( medium rare) and just melts in your mouth. We shared a baked potato that was hot and fluffy inside. Once again, perfectly prepared. I would also recommend any pasta dish with at Sibley Gardens.

Terry and I shared a bottle of the Banfi Chianti Classico Reserva 2012. Somehow I have a hard time NOT ordering a bottle of Italian , in an Italian restaurant (even if it wasn’t one of my favorite wine regions). This was an easy glass. Perfect for our comfortable surroundings and conversation. There was wild strawberry, a touch light blackberry, earth and a little leather, integrated and starting to soften up on the edges, all wrapped in a silky glossy finish. We finished with the tiramisu , of course , delicious!! Bravo!!

$$$– The prices are reasonable here for both the quality and quantity you receive.

Portions –  Large enough to share, or if not sharing, terrific leftovers.

Quality –  Everything was perfectly prepared.

My lunch/dinner companion – Terry Brandau. One of our favorite guests at my employers restaurant. A terrific chef with hidden talents galore! I had a great time and am looking forward to more adventures in dining!

In my opinion ……. Every course was perfectly prepared, the timing was as requested; leisure. The wines were served at the proper temperatures and the ambience warm, inviting and relaxing. This is a great restaurant for all. From singles, friends, couples, or families.

It’s no wonder it’s been a favorite destination for so many years! Thank you, Sibleys!

Terry’s Note:  My dinner companion, who is my friend LJ, is a superb server and has an excellent knowledge of wine, (in my opinion), in her own right. We talked, ate, and drank the delightful bottle of wine she chose, for four hours! The wine she picked was perfect with the delicious Steak Sammy. Topic of our conversation – food, wine and restaurant reviews of course!  I am so fortunate that LJ will also regularly be suggesting wine pairing for some of my recipes.  AND, regarding this fine dining establishment, you cannot go wrong having lunch or dinner here.
